We have a new friend who has been a huge blessing to Camp Christopher. She has shared her story, her soul and brought so much beauty to the place. If you go there - the landscaping, little hidden gems and so much more is because of Dana! What a blessing she has been for us and for this space. The link below takes you to a blog she wrote after staying at Camp Christopher. She is a very talented writer. and if your heart is not touched you are missing something. https://www.naazh.org/post/health-hope-heritage-and-hospital

• We have had some amazing stories told by recent campers who have stayed at Camp Christopher. I'd like to share some of those comments and some pictures. • I’d like to just start out by saying thank you. Thank you for your kindness, for your empathy and for the gift of peace from your land. What you have going on is a gift that can never be bought. • I’ve been a teacher and preacher on the healing powers of nature for sometime. Sometimes as a teacher, I forget the power that it holds until I am put back into nature and I’m quickly reminded again. • I now have a place I can go to to lose my mind and find my soul. • While there, I found myself grounding in small, steady joys: sprucing up the memorial gardens, painting rocks with bright colors and messages of hope, casting a line into the water, swimming under a blue sky, and warming up next to a crackling fire with good company. The air felt thick with grace. A space where tears were welcome, silence was understood, and laughter was holy. • I just had some of the most peaceful healing days of my life at camp Chris. We have lots of openings on weekdays and a few weekends for the rest of this summer/fall. If the weather holds we may extend camping season to later in October. Stay tuned.

We are moving our work day to Saturday, May 10 - yes, I know, that is the fishing opener but it's the only date that works on our end. Back up date is Sunday, May 11 - yes, I know that is Mother's Day and really what is better than spending a day by the river with your mom! Our main task will be to build the gazebo (a kit we are purchasing) and just general cleanup. Also, planting some flowers, etc. Any and all are welcome to help! Or if you just need to get away and enjoy nature and watch others work - that works as well. • Saturday, May 10 - 10:00 a.m. - ? - Workday • Sunday, May - 10:00 a.m. - ? - Back up workday

Just a couple of quick notes: • Friends of Camp Christopher - I am not a fan of spraying for mosquitoes being a beekeeper and lover of nature, however, the mosquitoes are so bad this year up at the camp that it makes it almost impossible to stay there. So, reluctantly, I have decided to get the grounds sprayed for the rest of the summer or until it becomes tolerable again. I can't tell you how much I struggled with this decision but the importance of this space being available for those who need it for grieving, healing, hoping and reflecting outweighed the environmental concerns. Hopefully, within the next week it will be a little less annoying to enjoy this space. • The road and driveway are very passable now but have not been fixed to the level we want because of the wet conditions. We have our contractor ready to roll as soon as the weather allows. • Plenty of openings - check out the calendar. Peace my friends, Dave

• Road and driveway are planned to be fixed in the next couple of weeks if all goes according to plan. • We have had lots of cancellations this month. Check the calendar and see if there is a date that works for you. Email me at campchriscotton@gmail.com if you'd like to reserve a time at the camp. • Two bigger projects and a few smaller things to do at the camp if you are bored and are looking for something to do: • There is a stack of metal from the old metal shed on the old platform. Just want it gone. • There is a sprawling willow shrub on the northwest corner of the property. Just want it gone. • There are some cement blocks still to be moved from behind the deck. If you want any....feel free to take them. Just want them gone. • Some of the birch trees could use some trimming. • Looking for someone to mow next weekend as Esther and I will be gone to Alaska for our 40th anniversary and there is no one staying at camp until June 14 at this point. Email me if you can help. • The screened porch needs some adjust on the metal corners as the screen is too loose and not serving a purpose at this point. • The mosquitoes are nasty especially at sunrise and sunset. Be prepared. • The driveway and road have finally dried out and while it is a rough, slow ride the mud holes have dried out. Still stay on the driveway at the camp and don't go past the porta-potty. • Check out the videos posted touring the camp. They will be posted to the website (maybe?) and are posted on the Facebook page. Hope you all stay well and if you are struggling you are finding the people to support you. Life is hard but you are not alone. Love y'all! Dave

It had been a long week and when I heard the issues one of our campers was having with the driveway it was kind of the end of my sanity for a moment. I overreacted to the circumstances and posted about it. While the idea of one of our folks coming to camp for peace and some serenity and then experiencing hardship and anxiety is something that bothers me a great deal, I overreacted to the situation. There are ways to fix what went wrong and too much good has come from this for us and for our guests. We are working on getting the road and driveway fixed. It may take some time as the road restrictions are not removed until Monday and we may need things to dry out a bit. However, we are talking with a couple of folks who will eventually be able to help us out. For now, the trail cam solution will be to have folks turn it off if they are uncomfortable with it. I will make sure that everyone is aware that it is there and hopefully help them understand its purpose. Thanks all for your understanding and support. You've been heard and will continue to be heard. Camp Christopher will live on but please note the updates here and on the website. You can also get on the email list for updates on the website.

Dear friends, we have had two campers now get stuck at the end of the driveway by the porta-potty, electric post. The issue is where they trenched in the electric line was not properly restored and is now a mud pit. If you are coming to Camp Chris please don't drive past the shed. I'm going up there tomorrow to check it out and will give an update here and on the website. We are working on a solution for the driveway and road but it may take time for it to be done due to the wet conditions. Also, I was made aware that the trail cam we have on the site may be triggering for some folks. Please know that I put it there to see what kind of wildlife we have at the camp. It is not intended nor used to spy on people. It is not set to video and only takes still shots. I always delete any non animal pics when I receive them. However, I want to be sensitive to those who may find a camera disturbing. You are welcome to turn it off during your stay. Just open up the box and the switch is on the left as you look at it. Push it all the way down (I think.) and it will be off. I just ask that you turn it back on when you leave. My apologies if this has upset any of our campers in any way. I'm literally shaking and in tears that we have had two campers who desperately needed the peace and safe space to work through life and instead this place added to their anxiety and made it more difficult to navigate. I wish I had an answer to make it all better but I don't. We really want this to be a place that helps not hurts. We may have to consider if it is accomplishing the goals we had in mind or if it is time to close it up. Not there yet but struggling with it all right now. Please take care of yourselves. Dave

This is Dave sharing the story from a family who stayed at Camp Chris this past week.We had a great weekend with my sister and her kids at Camp Christopher,(https://www.facebook.com/campchriscotton?__cft__[0]=AZXvq6ZM2cM3XrQJgTxIdClqWo3Dt5KmTL1-lFxj_MEio3m9abe_WllhyQgLfhIFjPrOU1eLNity1gekxk6tf_v_cI3jwxJeNftS40SyQnY-d83dB7xC1TVLMu2mOdKxG9aUA0G3qwR-YuYkbYj-2Vc-6JlayEgwPL_O_DB5fWtvhbSWf3OXTEjPGfyDSmBPOCs&__tn__=-]K-R) "A place to grieve, heal, reflect, and hope." Esther and I just returned home from a weekend camping at Camp Christopher. The weather was beautiful, the birds were singing, the river flowing, the red-tailed hawk screeching above, the chipmunks chattering a conversation with us and all was well with the world. We have a few updates to share with our Camp Chris Community: *We now have electricity for all to use! Thanks to all those who generously gave to support us in this effort. *The driveway got torn up a bit by the electric installation. I have someone coming to look at the driveway and Hawthorne Lane and if we can afford it we will try and get that upgraded. *The riding lawn mower is out of commission for now. It is being picked up tomorrow and will hopefully be fixed soon. *The screened gazebo is wonderful! *We are going to need more firewood before the summer ends. If you were one of the folks who offered firewood please contact me so we can set something up. *There is a portable fire pit that can used wherever on the campgrounds. This is a separate one from the permanent pit by the deck. Please tip up or upside down when not in use as it captures all the rain. *The stuff in the shed is for anyone and everyone to use. The chairs, matches, lighters, etc. Help yourself but please return to the shed for our next guests. *If anyone wants an old Yardman riding mower that is missing a hood, has flat tires and no oil or gas - it is in the old metal shed and is yours for the taking. The neighbor tells me this is the mower the previous owner used most of the time last year. *Please leave a note in the journal in the shed and share your story on the webpage under the Updates tab. Click on the Create New Post button. We continue to feel blessed by this community and are thankful for each of you. Grace and peace, Dave and Esther

Change of plans, going to move the great gazebo build at Camp Chris up to either this afternoon or tomorrow as the weather looks dry for those days. If you are available either later this afternoon or tomorrow email me at campchriscotton@gmail.com.

Could use some help on Wednesday, July 5 at Camp Chris to install a screened gazebo on the deck. I'll be there by 11:00 and late lunch will be on me at the Historic Wilbert Cafe! Should only take a couple of hours, maybe, perhaps, I might be lying but let's go with that. Was going to come on Monday and stay until then but looks a bit wet for the 3rd and 4th. Not complaining, we need the rain. Hopefully won't be too wet on the 5th. This plan is contingent on the weather cooperating.

We will be hosting a workday this Sunday, May 14 from 1:00 - ???. Esther and I will be there with our moms for Mother's Day. Heck bring your moms too! Hopefully we will get everything ready for our first guests on May 19. I'll be bringing the picnic table, fire ring and other goodies for the camp. I think the porta potty will be there by this time as well. Bring your rakes, shovels, gloves, beverages, snacks, chainsaws, whatever you think will work. Looking forward to meeting some of you on this day. We host some other days over Memorial Weekend if needed.

Good evening all! I will be sending a Google Meets invite to all those who have offered to help and/or donate to Camp Chris for Sunday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m. We will be having a couple of workdays on Sunday, May 14, Sunday, May 28 and Monday, May 29 if needed. All workdays start at 1:00 p.m. and go until we need to eat and rest! All are welcome. Many hands make light work right?! We got to see Camp Chris for the first time last Sunday when it wasn't covered in snow or water. The river was still not totally in it's banks but we could walk most of the land. I have to say it is more beautiful, peaceful and serene than I even imagined. I hope those that stay here feel the same way we did. Lots of healing and hope in this place. If you are one of the people who have offered to donate something to the camp you can email me at campchriscotton@gmail.com to get the address and directions. We still need to put a picnic table, shed, firepit (which I have at home) and some other items for campers. The porta potty we are getting donated is currently not accessible so I will be setting up a rental unit prior to our first campers on May 19. Again, email me with questions or if you want my phone number for a conversation. I have had some wonderful conversations with folks already. My heart is full and abundantly blessed by the compassion and generosity of this community.

Esther and I will be at Camp Christopher tomorrow afternoon. Probably arriving around 1 for anyone that wants to meet, chat, explore. Weather is going to suck but time for Esther to see it without 40 feet of snow and me to see it without 40 feet of snow or water. Bring a picnic lunch and hang with us! Message me here for the address if interested.
